WHAT HAVE THESE TWO MEN IN COMMON?
Apparently, they flunked history…
Speaker of the House, John Boehner, has invited the Japanese Prime Minister, Mr. Abe, to address US Congress on… Hirohito’s birthday…
That this foreign affairs’ blunder could happen shows, once again, that WWII in Asia and the Pacific during which millions of people died under the brutal regime of Hirohito is a complete blind spot in a country that was very much involved in that war.
Believe it or not, but this is an American story, too: people of the Indo Dutch community in the US, who still live with the scars of that war today, should not be represented by a Speaker of the House who does not recognize or honor the trauma and sacrifices of these families who fought for our freedom.
I personally believe that Prime Minister Abe is welcome but only if he can honor those who fell under Hirohito and can deliver a message of truth and reconciliation with the many people of the many nations that Japan invaded during WWII.
Germany did it.
Japan is next.
